Dog squeaky toys are meant to relieve your pet from boredom and also make him smart and intelligent. However, before you can fully make use of these toys, you will need to impart a proper training to your pet. It’s quite easy to train dogs how to play properly with dog squeaky toys. When done successfully you will be glad that you were able to teach your dog the correct way of handling dog squeaky toys, thus making these toys last longer.
Handling Dog Squeaky Toys
- Teach your dog that everything, even the dog toy, belongs to you. This will allow you to take full control over the situation. It will train your dog to play only with toys that are given to him. This will also teach your dog not chew on things such as shoes or other expensive items in the house.
- It’s important that your dog understands that he should not run off with the toy while playing with it. Dogs are quite playful by nature. I will tell you a simple idea I have found quite effective. You can train your dog not to run away with the toy by using a leash at first. This will help your dog understand that it should not go too far away when given the toy. While running off unrestricted is fun for the dog, perceiving control (by you, for instance with a leash) will go a long way in making the dog think, learn, and remember.
- Teach the dog how to gently retrieve a toy from your hand. Quietly offer the dog toy from your hand. Observe how your dog takes the toy away. If your dog takes the toy by snatching it, take the dog toy back and place it near your chest somewhat communicating to your dog that the toy belongs to you. Offer the dog toy again, if your dog makes the same move, pull the toy back before its teeth touches it. Repeat this step until your dog learns how to gently take the toy away from your hand. Offer a treat once the dog successfully completes this step.
- Once your dog has learned how to retrieve a toy from your hand. You can try using several toys at one time. This is a good exercise to teach your dog how to retrieve and return toys to you. You can do this by offering one toy to your dog and then tossing the second one. Your dog will retrieve the toy that you tossed, and while your dog is retrieving this toy, toss the other one. Soon you will be able notice that your dog will be capable of retrieving a toy and returning it to you.
- When your pet can handle dog squeaky toys properly, teach your dog where to place the toy after playing with it.
While you try out these tips, I recommend that you personally supervise your pet when using dog squeaky toys. Once your dog is trained how to handle a toy, you can give him all sorts of dog squeaky toys to play with. Make sure though that the dog squeaky toys you give to your dog are big enough for it to swallow. This will prevent your dog from possibly choking on the toy or on some loose part of the toy. Choose the tougher kinds of toys during training. Once your dog is fully trained to play with dog squeaky toys, you may then give him other types of dog toys to play with, such as chew toys. Always check if the dog toys are in proper condition. Replace old and worn out ones with new ones as you don’t want your dog to get bored with his dog squeaky toys.
